At first glance the Portuguese Man of War, it looks like a delicate jellyfish, drifting gracefully on the ocean's surface with its shimmering blue and violet sail catching the light like glass. But don’t be fooled, the Portuguese Man of War is no jellyfish. It's a siphonophore, a colony of individual organisms that work together as one, each playing a specialized role in survival.
Beneath its translucent float, long tentacles can trail over 100 feet deep, armed with venomous stingers used to paralyze small fish and other prey. It has no means of propulsion, it relies entirely on the wind and currents to carry it across the ocean.
Though beautiful, its sting can be painful to humans, making it a creature both admired and respected. Found in warm waters around the world, especially in the Atlantic, the Portuguese Man of War is a reminder of how much mystery still lives at the surface of the sea.
